A. Leo Nash: Burning Man July 13 — August 31, 2007

We are pleased to present the Chicago debut of photographs from Burning Man, a project started more than thirteen years ago by A. Leo Nash. Burning Man is an annual event that occurs in the Nevada desert. As Nash states. "The search for authenticity and a place to operate dangerous mechanical devices, has led a group of artists out into the Nevada Desert. There, in the harsh white and blank expanse of a dry lake bed, they are able to operate machines that define a new direction in art. Some are robotic, most are built from salvaged industrial cast-offs and blatantly cobbled together parts, and almost all somehow use fire, or should I say FIRE, as their primary means of expression."

Artists come together from around the globe to comment on society through the creation of art. Nash says, " There’s an honesty and defiance that exists in the work that compels the viewer, in the way that love often strikes, leaving one involuntarily disorientated or some how changed... The din and static of mainstream society invades every corner of our lives and these artists are driven to comment on it in profound and humorous ways."

A selection of 15 photographs will be presented from his upcoming publication, Burning Man: Art in the Desert (Harry N. Abrams, 2007). The book will be available at the exhibition.
