Gallery Artists 2003 marks the continuation of our annual exhibition showcasing new and notable images by twelve gallery artists. This year we will showcase new images by Shelby Lee Adams, whose work in the mountains of Appalachia now includes the younger generation who are settling in trailer parks, surrounded by satellite dishes and technology. Tom Baril will exhibit his newest gelatin silver prints of flowers and vegetables created from collodion wet plates, taking on an antique quality. Elizabeth Ernst will show early pieces from her ongoing project which focuses on the circus, and the myths and oddities surrounding it. Deborah Luster will present pieces from One Big Self, photographs from three Louisiana prisons taken over the past four years. Maria Martinez-Cañas will show new pieces from Hortus and Naturalia, which depict images of plant and fossil life, reminding us of nature's ability to give nourishment as well as its intuitive power to consume all it contacts. Abelardo Morell will show new images from his recent book, A Book of Books, which reveals the graphic and seductive quality of books, as they line the shelves of libraries and coffee tables. Holly Roberts will debut new pieces which continue to explore issues of identity by obscuring and revealing photographic imagery under layers of oil paint. New to the gallery is Rodney Smith, whose elegant black and white work reveals the symmetry and balance of man in nature through the eyes of a Surrealist. Jack Spencer will exhibit new images from Mexico which continue to examine everyday heroics prevalent in ordinary life which are often overlooked. Ron van Dongen will showcase new images taken from his ever-changing backyard garden, where he plants, feeds, waters and cultivates flowers specifically to be photographed. Joel-Peter Witkin, who begins each photograph by sketching his ideas, will exhibit a selection of his drawings along with the accompanying photograph.
