Gallery Artists 2002 May 3 — June 1, 2002

Gallery Artists 2002 marks a return to our annual exhibition showcasing new and notable images by eleven gallery artists. This year we will showcase new work by Keith Carter, who continues to use selective focus, as well as bleach on his negatives, to document the world around him, transforming skies into apocalyptic vistas. Mark Citret will show his timeless black and white images of unremarkable spaces which force us to slow down, listen, look and reflect, as he seeks to reveal the spectacular within the ordinary. Terry Evans will exhibit new pieces from her specimen series photographed from the archives at The Field Museum in Chicago. This work will also be shown at The Field Museum from July through January. Michelle Keim will present pieces from her ongoing night time work at industrial sites where radiant colors are set against an ominous Midwest sky, resulting in images which are both seductive and haunting. Michael Light will present a group of color images from Full Moon, a large format sequential book which assembles historical, scientific and striking images from the Apollo lunar flight missions between 1967- 72. Maria Martinez-Cañas will show pieces from her older series Metamorfosis, photograms of organic materials which refer to a transformation or evolution, addressing issues of decay and mortality. Richard Misrach will debut new work from Battleground Point, an area in the Nevada desert where water surrounds sand dunes, creating a wetlands. Abelardo Morell will show new camera obscura images made in Cuba. A book of his camera obscura photographs is planned to be released in October. Josephine Sacabo will exhibit work which was inspired by Juan Rulfo's novel, Pedro Paramo, about a town in ruins and its souls doing penance. This work will be published in October, followed by a show at CEG in January. Robert Stivers will showcase new images from his ongoing series "Listening to Cement," in which objects and people are transformed from flesh into cement, reminding us that all things, animate and inanimate, have life. Jeffrey Wolin will debut new work which documents Italian ruins scattered throughout Provence, France. This work will be published in the Fall of 2003 and shown at CEG.
