Coverings

I was pregnant with my daugher when I climbed my first monument. After years of photographing contested public monuments from a polite distance, it suddenly became imporant to use my body to intervene in the dissimilation of false histories against women. I interrupt the dominated landscape with digital manipulation, on-site intervention, and performance.

My counter-monuments unsettle well-worn imperial attributes and consider alternative vocabularies. These Coverings begin with a liberal application of Adobe Photoshop's "healing tool" on my images of contested monuments. After printing to scale, I return to the site and install "healed" photographs over the statue. Sometimes wrapping around a monument and other time serving to block a monument from view, the installed prints reform the landscape if only briefly.

Each photographic effort carries the scars of efforts to remove, reinterpret, and restore landscape. Addressing the slipperiness of both medium and myth, my interventions never wholly erase the prevailiing image or narrative. Rather, theese photographic interruptions highlight relationships around public space and memory and serve as an alternative to a master narrative. 

Kelly Kristin Jones was raised on the west side of Chicago and received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the receipent of a number of awards and fellowships including a Post-MFA Faculty Fellowship at the University of Georgia, a Luminarts Cultural Foundation Project Grant, the Forward Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award, the James Weinstein Memorial Fellowship, and the Union of League and Civic Arts Foundation Prize. Her solo exhibition of contested monument work at the McEachern Art Center at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia shuttered early due to COVID-19.

Coverings images are available as either 30 x 20" or 38 x 26" pigments prints made in editions of 5. Prices range from $1800 to $2400 depending on size.
