For many of us, animals occupy a special place in our hearts. Their presence gives us comfort, companionship, adventure and surprise, filling us with awe and questions about our own evolution. Throughout art history, artists have been inspired by other species, creating works which are amusing, challenging and heart-wrenching. The Animal Within brings together painters and photographers whose works focus on animals and the complex behaviors that make them so familiar...so much like us.

Over the decades, researchers have studied almost all known species, including the great apes, migrating birds and herds of elephants, attempting to unlock their behavioral patterns – patterns which tend to unite humans and animals. All of the artists in The Animal Within create work which deals with the impact of animals in our lives and in society. Like humans, animals have a dark side, displaying anger, jealousy and fear. On the other hand, animals also display devotion and affection, some mating for life, creating a loving bond that only breaks upon death. Through the innate behavior of animals, we learn a great deal about ourselves and our development as a people.
