The inspiration for this project entitled, Fade to White, came from learning that my eight-year old daughter will soon loose her ability to see.  Because I seek to understand this impending reality by looking metaphorically at it, I have sought out blind people and have photographed them.  Historically, the sub-genre of photographing the blind, which has it’s roots in street photography, often involved some form of voyeuristic subterfuge which enabled the photographer to capture the image without the subject being aware of his or her presence.   Antithetically, collaboration was central to the creation of these images. Discussions of what it means to be blind often lead to a dialogue regarding the ways in which one expects blind people to be depicted in photographs.  The use of the view camera harkens back to photography’s past and the many examples of how blind people were photographed historically as well as tableaux photographs, which were the fashion over a century ago. The range of visual acuity among my subjects is diverse, with some being legally blind but with some reduced vision, and others with no vision whatsoever.  To the latter I would attempt to articulate how I saw them through the ground glass, which I found humbling as some of my subjects were born blind, making my description irrelevant. Ultimately, as I spend more time with blind people I am developing a perverse kinship with the very condition that will eventually lay claim to my daughter’s eyesight. For me solace lies in the creation of this work.
