The past year has proven to be an optimistically challenging experience for my family, overwhelmed with both financial difficulty and death. A little over a year ago, my father was violently evicted due to a misunderstanding between local police and apartment management about what time he was to move out. Most of his belongings were destroyed and he is still without a home today. In the past few months, my Mom's boyfriend has been increasingly crippled by multiple types of cancer while the father-figure of his life passed away due to a head injury from falling. One month after his death, my cousin died in a car accident at the age of 19.
This body of work is a representation of how these struggles are affecting my family personally. With the use of journal entries, e-mails, and photographs that involve our experiences, I hope to make an engaging comparison between the metaphors of death and the present historical moment of financial tragedy. My process of writing and making pictures throughout these experiences serves as a futile search for answers or reasons; I look for them in the past memories, e-mails, and photographic evidence of someone's presence. While this process won't reveal reasons for the tragedies, it exemplifies my current relationships with optimism, family, money, and society. My perspective focuses on the fragility of life and the concern for others by demonstrating its importance in our current generation.
